If you’re looking for a job you enjoy, consider joining an exciting growth technology company like Origami Energy. I recently caught up with our IT Manager, Andrew Dawson, to share his experience of working here.
How does your role as IT Manager contribute to Origami Energy?
My role is really about enabling everyone else in the company to make the most efficient and effective use of technology so that it works for them in every aspect and never holds them back. Supporting this, I ensure the security of our systems and safety of our data by installing, configuring and maintaining industry-leading security hardware and software. If there’s anything that I can do to help make technology work more smoothly and securely, I do my utmost to make sure that happens as soon as possible.
Describe a typical day for you at Origami?
A typical day for me includes some project work and some support work – fielding phone calls from anyone in the company to help with technical issues that they might otherwise struggle with.
What are you most proud of during your time here?
I planned and executed a smooth transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10 with most users being up and running as normal within 30 minutes. It was a great success.
Aside from the day job, you’re also on the Origami Energy social team. Tell me about some of the events the team runs?
We run all sorts of activities such as virtual reality experiences, wine & cheese tasting, after-work drinks, darts and table tennis competitions and a running club. The virtual reality games are a personal favourite of mine – they get a bit of friendly competition going in the office.
What’s Hack Friday?
Hack Friday is held once a month. It’s a day when the technical team (and anyone else who wishes to join in) “down tools” from their normal job and spend some time working on a project that isn’t necessarily their normal work. This aims to allow people to work on something that they are passionate about and might contribute towards Origami’s success in unexpected ways. It allows for individuals to innovate on a micro-level and achieve things that they wouldn’t otherwise have the time to do. Origami also provides lunch on these days, so it is a great opportunity to get together with colleagues, be sociable and discuss these individual or collaborative projects.
Why did you join Origami Energy?
Origami offer me autonomy, a great place to work and a friendly team to work with, along with a competitive remuneration package.
What three words would you use to describe our culture?
Inclusive, flexible and committed.
What is your most memorable moment at Origami Energy?
It’s difficult to pick just one. The first one that comes to mind is that in my first two weeks the company had major successes and the Operations Manager had a baby, so I enjoyed some Bollinger Champagne twice! It was a wonderful introduction to Origami! Every town hall event brings good memories as well, with the team-building events always bringing much hilarity.
What do you most enjoy about Origami?
The thing I most enjoy is the amount of trust that the company has, not just in me, but in every employee. No one is micro-managed, everyone is trusted to pull their weight and take responsibility for their own work. I think this approach makes everyone feel more committed.
